One Small Step for Aviation, One Giant Leap for General Aviation
February 2010 - We have been loud and clear and it looks like the Administration is finally listening to general aviation's voice. AOPA is reporting that Congress has put the notion of user fees to rest at least for the 2011 budget. For the time being, this decision will allow the GA community to focus on other issues and priorities, most importantly renewed industry growth.

"General Aviation Serves America" in Full Swing
July 2009 - General Aviation, as we know it, is in danger of becoming extinct due to excessive user fees, security regulations, and negative public perception. However, AOPA and NATA have taken a stand to prevent that from happening by creating a national campaign, General Aviation Serves America, to educate lawmakers and the general public. The crusade is picking up speed and visibility from the GA community. Check their website or blog frequently for updates and ways to help save our industry. Together we are stronger!
President of Dorr Aviation to Serve as NAFA Vice President
May 2009 - Elections were held in the spring and Robert Howe, President of Dorr Aviation Credit Corp., LLC, was selected as the new Vice President of NAFA (National Aircraft Finance Association). NAFA is a "non-profit corporation dedicated to promoting the general welfare of individuals and organizations providing aircraft financing and loans secured by aircraft".
When asked why it's vital to be involved with this organization, Robert states "for many years, NAFA has been the premier source for information and resources for aviation lenders in the corporate and business aviation market".
Robert was honored by the nomination and feels his appointment will be beneficial because "the general aviation market has by and large been under served by this great organization and with 20 plus years at Dorr Aviation, I feel that I am uniquely qualified to assist in expanding NAFA's expertise to include GA as Vice President of NAFA".
NAFA currently has over 150 Members and Associate Members and holds an annual meeting each spring for its Members.

These facts can be used to fight back against the demonization of GA by politicians, the news outlets, and the general public. We are in charge of our destiny and we need to be the ones to bring our reputation back into good standing (where it should've always been in the first place).

New Cessna Rally Call
March 25th, 2009 - Recently our President, Robert Howe, received a mailing from Cessna with their new ad campaign. Usually these types of marketing materials are overlooked since we get a plethora of them and they really don’t apply to our every day working lives. However, these were different. These caught our eye. These made us stop, think and want to rally around their cause. It is the same cause everyone in General Aviation is impassioned about these days. We need to rise against these tumultuous times and fight the negative reputation business aviation has received in the press. It is time for us to fight back! Make it your mission too. Cessna Rise

Bonus Depreciation is back!
February 19th 2009
According to Advocate Consulting, an aviation tax services company, they are reporting the following information which directly affects the General Aviation population:
Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 new aircraft purchases qualify for bonus depreciation. The new law readopts bonus depreciation provisions retroactive to purchases made after January 1, 2009. Under this new proposal, owners who use their aircraft in business would be entitled to accelerated 50% bonus depreciation on all new aircraft purchases. Bonus depreciation would also include new improvements to a used aircraft.
Enhanced Expensing Election available for New and Use Aircraft Purchases
In addition to a new bonus depreciation, the law also expands the applicability of the enhanced expensing deduction under Section 179. This applies to both new and used aircraft (including improvements) for qualifying small business taxpayers (taxpayers who invest less than $663,000 in capital improvements during the taxable year). The new law allows taxpayers to expense up to $250,000 per year (rather than the current $133,000 max.) and redefines a qualifying small business taxpayer as one who makes less than $1,050,000 in capital investments during the year.
Buy an Airplane in 2009, Get a Refund of 2004 Income Tax
The package also includes a new provision that allows losses of qualified taxpayers incurred in 2008 or 2009 to be carried back 5 years and allow taxpayers an immediate refund. A qualified taxpayer is a small business with gross receipts of $15,000,000 or less. Present law provides that net operating losses are carried back 2 years and forward 20. The purchase of an aircraft for business use could generate bonus depreciation resulting in a loss available for carry back for qualified taxpayers.
